All five adults had growth hormone deficiency as children and received pituitary growth hormones prepared in a specific way from cadavers. The treatment approach was discontinued after cases of a rare brain disorder called Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease were found to be associated with the administration of contaminated human growth hormone from cadavers. Although Alzheimer’s is not a prion disease, some separate research suggests that the two proteins that are hallmarks in Alzheimer’s disease — amyloid beta and tau — behave like prions. “This study suggests that in very rare circumstances Alzheimer’s disease may be transmitted between humans via human growth hormone from deceased donors. “I’m also intrigued by how these results may inform potential therapeutic targets and strategies in the future,” Isaacson said, regarding Alzheimer’s disease.

On Sept. 10, 2022, Katz purchased a charged lemonade from a Panera Bread in Philadelphia, according to the suit. It's an energy drink that has lemon flavor," said Elizabeth Crawford, a partner at Philadelphia-based law firm Kline & Specter, PC. The lawsuit alleges the charged lemonade is "defective in design because it is a dangerous energy drink." Conroy said Katz had bought at least one other charged lemonade in the days prior to her cardiac arrest. Katz's parents, who declined to speak about the lawsuit, are desperate for people to understand exactly what is in Panera's charged lemonade before they buy it, Crawford said.

The NewsMental health-related visits to emergency rooms by children, teenagers and young adults soared from 2011 to 2020, according to a report published on Monday in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The sharpest increase was for suicide-related visits, which rose fivefold. The research, drawn from data from the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey, looked at the annual number of mental health-related E.R. The number of visits rose for many conditions, including mood and behavioral disorders, substance use and psychosis. But the increase in suicide-related issues was most pronounced, increasing to 4.2 percent of all pediatric emergency room visits in 2020 from 0.9 percent in 2011.
CNN —The two rival forces battling for control in Sudan have both said they are ready to help evacuate foreign nationals, raising hopes international powers could soon rescue stranded citizens after a week of fighting. On Friday, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) said they were ready to partially reopen all airports in Sudan to air traffic to allow countries to evacuate their nationals. Fierce fighting broke out in Sudan last Saturday between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF), commanded by Sudan’s military leader General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan and the paramilitary RSF, led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo. The State Department does not keep official counts of US citizens in foreign countries and Americans are not required to register when they go abroad. US State Department officials told staffers estimated 16,000 American citizens in Sudan, most of whom are dual nationals.

WASHINGTON, Dec 23 (Reuters) - U.S President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden will visit the Children's National Hospital in Washington on Friday to meet with pediatric patients, their families and hospital staff, the White House said. First ladies traditionally visit the hospital around the Christmas holiday, dating back to first lady Bess Truman during the post-second world war presidency of Harry Truman. Last year, President Biden made the trip, marking the first time a sitting president made a holiday visit to Children’s National. The president and the first lady will host a book reading of "The Snowy Day" with a group of pediatric patients, including some who participate virtually from their hospital room. The couple will also visit children and families in the cardiac unit, the White House said.
And pediatric hospitals are feeling the strain, with more than three-quarters of their hospital and ICU beds occupied for the past few months. Her prematurity “increased her risk of how her body would react to the RSV virus,” the doctor explained. Medical teams at Greater Baltimore Medical Center helped Ayra Pokharel before she was transferred to another hospital. Sending patients to other facilities for treatment is common during the height of flu and RSV seasons, Nguyen said. RSV symptoms RSV is a common virus, but it can cause serious illness, especially in younger infants and older adults.
The answer is likely to frustrate parents: There is no obvious reason some healthy babies get so sick with RSV that they must be hospitalized, on oxygen, while others do not. That means babies who have never been exposed to a virus like RSV may be hit harder than older children who've had previous RSV infections. A study published Thursday in The Lancet Respiratory Medicine found that in Europe, about 2% of healthy children under age 1 who get RSV require hospitalization. The U.S. is in an unusual surge in respiratory viruses, including RSV, that have overwhelmed children's hospitals. “They’re experiencing their first RSV virus at the same time as other viruses,” including rhinoviruses that cause the common cold.
Rhode Island is among the states most severely affected by the aggressive, nationwide surge of pediatric respiratory infections. As of Monday, 76% of pediatric hospital beds were full nationwide. Like most states, Rhode Island is seeing cases of flu, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), Covid and other respiratory viruses all at the same time. Weed said Rhode Island is unique in that "many states have more than one pediatric hospital, and we only have one." Overly said his hospital might benefit from Rhode Island declaring a state of emergency related to the surge of pediatric respiratory viruses.
“We’re extremely overwhelmed,” said Dr. Rishi Lulla, director of pediatric hematology/oncology at Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island. Seasonal respiratory viruses fill children’s hospitals every year, but the number of beds that are full now is well above the average. Driving much of the current need for beds at children’s hospitals is a spike in cases of RSV, which are 60% higher than at 2021’s peak. Nurse turnover is up 50% across the country since 2019, according to Mark Wietecha, CEO of the Children’s Hospital Association.
